Cold-pressed vs refined coconut oil
Both start as coconut. What separates them is everything that happens after the press. Cold-pressed oil is filtered through cloth and bottled as it comes. Refined oil is bleached and deodorised until the colour and the smell are gone. So the two do not look alike, smell alike, or cost the same.
Side by side
| Cold-pressed, unrefined | Refined | |
|---|---|---|
| How the oil is taken out | Squeezed out of sun-dried copra without heating it. | Driven out at high temperature, often with a solvent, to get more from the same copra. |
| What happens after pressing | Filtered through cloth, then bottled. Nothing taken out, nothing put in. | Bleached and deodorised to strip the colour and smell. Often blended. |
| Smell and taste | Smells and tastes of coconut. Nothing was taken out to stop it. | Close to neutral. Deodorising is exactly what removes it. |
| Colour | Pale gold when liquid, white when set. | Water-clear when liquid. |
| Behaviour below 24°C | Sets solid and white. Normal, not a fault. | Sets solid and white, the same way. |
| Price per litre | Higher. Less oil per kilo of copra, and no blending. | Lower. The cheapest bottle on a shelf is nearly always this. |
How to tell them apart in a shop
Hold the bottle up to the light. Unrefined oil is pale gold, and you can smell coconut through the cap. Refined oil is water-clear and close to odourless. Then read the label. Oil that has been cold pressed will say so on the front, and a blend has to list what went into it. A bottle claiming neither is usually refined.
What the difference costs
Refined coconut oil is cheaper per litre. There is no point pretending otherwise. A cold press leaves oil behind in the copra, so more coconut goes into every litre that reaches the bottle. Ours is ₹369 for a 1 litre bottle, or ₹369 a litre. What moves the price of coconut oil in Kerala goes into why.
Common questions
- What is the difference between cold-pressed and refined coconut oil?
- Cold-pressed coconut oil is squeezed out of dried copra without heating it, then filtered and bottled as it comes. Refined coconut oil is driven out at high temperature, often with a solvent, then bleached and deodorised. That strips the colour and the coconut smell. Both can start from the same copra. Everything after the press is what separates them.
- How can I tell if coconut oil is refined?
- Smell it and hold it up to the light. Unrefined cold-pressed coconut oil smells of coconut and is pale gold when liquid. Refined coconut oil is close to odourless and water-clear. The label is the other giveaway: oil that has been cold pressed will say so, and a blend has to list what went into it. A bottle claiming neither is usually refined.
- Why is cold-pressed coconut oil more expensive?
- A cold press leaves oil behind in the copra. High-temperature and solvent extraction do not, so they get more out of the same kilo. More copra goes into every litre of cold-pressed oil, and it is usually milled in small batches and never blended with cheaper oils. The price carries all of that.
- Does coconut oil going solid mean it is refined?
- No. All coconut oil sets solid below about 24°C, whether it is cold-pressed or refined. Oil turning white and firm in a cool kitchen is normal and says nothing about how it was made.
- Which coconut oil does Mythri sell?
- Mythri Oil Mills sells cold-pressed, unrefined coconut oil only. The copra is sun-dried without sulphur, pressed in the mill's own press without heating, filtered through cloth and bottled the same week. It is never bleached, deodorised or blended.
